I have three 'waves' of garb. The first
wave was a bunch of wench gear I had made to get through 8 days
at Pennsic about 8 years ago or so. Pennsic was my first SCA event
of all things but I have never been known to do baby steps. I have
been a late bloomer in the SCA. I drift in and out, decide my garb
needs an overhaul, I don't go to a lot of events but I really do
want to get serious about it now so this winter is the restart of
my SCA experience.
In the wench gear phase I didn't know what
I really wanted to be yet. I decided most definitely no to take
my heritage of Scottish because I do take the history of the Scots
rather personally and so it would be fun to "be someone else".
I do not know what triggered the middle eastern interest but I found
myself fascinated with the Ottoman Turks and since I watched everything
I could on them on the History Channel, etc. why not make that my
persona? Baroness Katja of our Barony gave me the link to her web
site to see her resource materials list, her persona is Seljuk which
is close and that gave me a start. I did decide to go Ottoman Turk
and onward I went from there.
The next wave of garb was my Turkish garb
made as simple as possible so I had a wardrobe for Pennsic because
I always wait until four weeks before Pennsic to need an entire
9 days worth of clothing, heh. It was plain but serviceable and
got me into who I would be.
The third wave of garb was more of the first
season of Turkish but still missing a lot of detail work. I altered
most of my garb to be Pennsic wearable. I do not take the heat well
at all. Meaning a lot of cheat garb and I am very dissatisfied with
this. I have one entari that is more as it should be and court wearable
and that is not going to suffice for me. I think I might be a garb
ho but that is okay since I can sew it all, right? *grin*
So this year is the revamp and redo of Safiye's
closet and her life. Everything needs improvement and I want to
get busy with all the things I have always wanted to do in the SCA.
The plan is three complete sets of garb that are nice for court
and events. The rest of what I have will be improved to be more
what I would like per period for Pennsic. I think basically it will
be making correct Entari's as most of the current entari's can very
easily be remade into chirka's. Yes, I confess to a lot of sleeveless
entari's so that I don't die in the heat.
This year it is an eye to detail. Turkish
embroidery will be one focus along with studying the are of the
period and creating more of the look depicted for us. And so it
begins.
